HOUSTON - Republican Sylvia Spivey filed Monday for the office of State Representative in District 137. Spivey previously ran for the seat in 2006.
"Four years ago, I ran for this office to help improve the community around us. While I wasn't successful, I was hopeful that we would see some improvement with our representation in Austin", said Spivey. "Today, as I talk to my neighbors, family and friends, I see that our public safety has not increased, we have not seen tax relief in these difficult economic times and we have not focused on significant improvements to public education."
Spivey concluded, "It's time that we have true leadership in Austin on these critical issues. I will be a vocal advocate for this district and I count of the people of this community to rally behind our message of offering real solutions to our problems."
A lifelong resident of Southwest Houston, having grown up in Sharpstown, Sylvia Spivey is a graduate of the University of Houston and of Leadership Houston. She is currently employed by Continental Airlines. Sylvia and her husband Randy are raising their two children just blocks from her childhood home. The daughter of Cuban immigrants, Spivey's bilingual skills have enhanced her community involvement and her volunteer work in local public schools.
House District 137 occupies portions of southwest Houston, including the communities of Sharpstown, Briarmeadow, Gulfton, Shenandoah and Piney Point.
Sylvia Spivey's diverse experience and deep knowledge of the district will make her the effective representative District 137 needs.
